A piece of metal not many can bear,
Those who can are very rare.
A symbol of hope for those in need,
Worn by only a special breed.
Gold and silver or other finishes many,
But the wearer cannot be just any.
He lives his life not like the rest,
Because of the metal upon his chest.
Stood out in a crowd, scrutinized by all,
Although the weight heavy, he always stood tall.
Counselor, teacher, diplomat, many jobs he did,
His duty always answered, he never hid.
He did his job proudly, with a scarce “thank you”,
“How can you handle this job, what gets you through”?
He put his trust in the Lord above,
An example to all of His precious love.
Never wavering or complaining life was not fair,
That piece of metal, God helped him bear.
He gave his life as others past,
The ultimate deed, never surpassed.
Called to Heaven, at God’s table he now eats,
Goes to work patrolling the golden streets.
Forever remembered, the man of this State,
He wore that piece of metal, badge 198.
