The Last Day
Lieutenant Craig Akard Lawton, Oklahoma Police Department
Another day, different than those in my past,
Today I’ll be gone, for it is my last.
Crisp and clean is the uniform I am wearing,
The badge upon my chest is brightly shinning.
My last briefing I go, nothing different, always the same
The cases are read, always boring, so mundane.
To my beat I go, waiting for dispatch to give a call,
Again and again, I go and answer them all.
A burglary here, larceny there, I am really tired,
But just two more hours and I’ll be retired.
I have been told that I am getting complacent
So what! Can’t you see, my mind is almost spent.
I’ve done my job, I’ve served my time,
My career is almost over, then I will be just fine.
The call comes out, the City bank alarm,
10th time this month, I’ll take it myself,
Just like before, there will be no harm.
I stroll to the door, just as they run out,
Guns in their hands, no time to react.
I don’t hear the blast, the blood starts to flow,
1 more hour, almost there, as my eyes begin to close.
Another day, different than those in my past,
Today I’ll be gone, for it is my last.
